Al Shurooq School for the Blind, in the West Bank
This specialist playground is, we think, the first sensory playground in Palestine. It replaces an old, unsafe playground which was dangerous for children with little or no sight.
The physical therapy department at the school use the playground in an enjoyable way to help develop the gross motor skills of the visually-impaired children. Most of the children there have problems in their posture, balance and coordination and safe play helps all these things develop.
All play equipment has been chosen carefully to ensure safety whilst maximising enjoyment.
The use of wood instead of metal helps keep the temperature stable - not too hot or too cold. The shade, which was added at a later date, is durable, and means the playground can be used throughout the year.
