Who provides the expertise?
Our American counterparts, Playgrounds for Palestine in the USA, have built nearly 40 playgrounds of which Playgrounds for Palestine UK have paid for seven. They oversee all aspects of the project including finding suitable sites and ensuring quality and safety. All donations are used to create custom-built playgrounds for Palestinian children.
Who provides the land?
The land is always donated from within Palestine or the relevant refugee camp in Lebanon or elsewhere.
Where are the playgrounds made?
Increasingly, we are looking to build sustainable playgrounds using natural materials wherever possible, built with local materials by local Palestinians. Henry, one of our amazing trustees, is a playground designer, so he helps ensure that everything is designed well and is built safely.
How are children involved?
Children who will use the playground are encouraged to be involved from the very beginning. Where they can, and it is safe, they help with site preparation and also with caring for the site.
What links could there be?
Liaison with children in the UK is important to us – children here and abroad learning from each other. This could be through email, web-links or . . . ? Let us know your suggestions! We have a volunteer who is Arabic speaking and can support where needed.
Who 'owns' the playground?
Ownership of the equipment is transferred to a local Palestinian NGO or municipality that takes over the responsibility of maintaining the playground and providing access to all children with equal and free access to boys and girls.
How is the money transferred?
Playgrounds for Palestine UK banks with CAF Bank (Charities Aid Foundation). Once the necessary paperwork is completed, funds are transferred to an agent of Playgrounds for Palestine who lives in the West Bank and releases funds according to agreed milestones. Confirmation of work completed is provided through photographic and video evidence.
