PLAYGROUNDS BUILT SO FAR
We may be a small charity but we are thrilled to have funded seven playgrounds thanks to our amazing supporters (and of course to PfP in the States who organise the logistics). Photos and videos of the playgrounds are shown below, and two more playgrounds are in the planning stage - one in Gaza and one in the West Bank. We couldn’t have done this without you!

Thank you from us, and from Palestine (see video).

AL SHUROOQ SCHOOL for the blind
in the WEST BANK, 2020

This specialist playground is, we think, the first sensory playground in Palestine. It replaces an old, unsafe playground which was dangerous for children with little or no sight.

All play equipment has been chosen carefully to ensure safety whilst maximising enjoyment.

The physical therapy department at the school use the playground in an enjoyable way to help develop the gross motor skills of the visually-impaired children. Most of the children there have problems in their posture, balance and coordination and safe play helps all these things develop.

The use of wood instead of metal helps keep the temperature stable - not too hot or too cold. The shade, which was added at a later date, is durable, and means the playground can be used throughout the year.

TALITHA KUMI SCHOOL
in the WEST BANK, 2020

Talitha Kumi school, near Bethlehem, has over 800 students. The younger children have a place to play, but there is nothing for older students so we are pleased to provide an outdoor gym which will be available for use for any teenagers in the Bethlehem governate. The longer term aim is to have better ground cover than shown below, and murals, to enhance the space. The playground is open to both students at the school and the surrounding Bethlehem community.

RASHIDIEH REFUGEE CAMP in LEBANON, 2019

Picture
Rashidieh refugee camp is located on the coast, near Tyre, and hosts many Palestinian refugees.

The playground is open to the public and serves thousands of children.  It was completed in 2019, in record time, so that local children woke up to it for Eid al Adha, one of the holiest days in the Muslim calendar. We are proud, and moved, to see children enjoying their playground in the video (see link) - thanks to everyone who made this possible.

BORJ EL SHAMALI REFUGEE CAMP

This playground is at a kindergarten in Lebanon. The ongoing crisis in Syria has led to an influx of Syrian refugees and also of Palestinians who had previously taken refuge in Syria.

This kindergarten is also in Gaza. It is heartwarming to see the little ones enjoying their new play equipment.

"One million children in Gaza are living in dire conditions. Many celebrated Eid in the dark without electricity. A UN report in 2012 said Gaza would be unliveable by 2020. Save the Children considers Gaza to be unliveable now."

Report by Save the Children, September 2017

The Gaza Strip is home to a population of approximately 1.9 million people, including some 1.4 million Palestine refugees. Years of conflict and blockade have left 80 per cent of the population dependent on international assistance. In 2018, the average unemployment rate reached over 50 per cent with over one million people reliant on food aid. Clean water is unavailable for 95 per cent of the population, and availability of electricity is spasmodic and unreliable.

KOBAR in the
West Bank, 2017

The first playground we funded is in the village of Kobar in the northern West Bank, 13 kilometres northwest of Ramallah. About 3500 people live there: more than a third are aged between 4 and 15. The playground is in daily use and is much enjoyed.
